A thesis project on preserving Mumbai’s heritage through an interactive system for public engagement and exploration.
The Problem
Mumbai’s built environment reflects the city’s layered history, shaped by shifting cultures, economies, and communities. Despite being the first Indian city to introduce heritage regulations, many historic structures today face pressure from rapid real estate development, limited protection, and weakening policies. As urban growth continues to erase visible traces of the past, there is a growing need for new ways to help people notice, understand, and care about the city’s heritage—so it remains part of everyday urban life.
The Solution
Culture Compass addresses this gap by reimagining how people engage with Mumbai’s historic neighborhoods. Through a mix of interactive signage, immersive AR storytelling, and a mobile app for curated heritage trails, the project encourages active, on-ground exploration.
